We share some ideas about the southern gothic. Like Frank Stanford and Maurice Manning we believe the genre can be condensed into shorter and more overtly lyrical forms, but we would extend this principle beyond both the poetic frames and dialected speakers of those writers into other formal structures and voices. Namely, we see in the modern southern gothic (when we see it) an over-reliance on the sympathetic protagonist and understand this phenomenon as vestigial of the effete, colorless meta-consciousness that is the speaker of too many, if not most any, contemporary poem. We want to explore the protagonistic possibilities beyond little kids, their pets, old ladies, and the woefully disenfranchised. Strunk & White cautioned "They will hear the beat of new vocabularies, the exciting rhythms of special segments of their society, each speaking a language of its own. All of us come under the spell of these unsettling drums; the problem...is to listen..and not be carried away." Well, fuck that bullshit. The violent must still bear it away...more of it and farther away.

James VanderMeer.

James was born into a family of saints who tended to the doomed--the damned, ill, and incarcerated. His father did prison ministry, and as soon as James could color within the lines his father had him draw pictures of Jesus to brighten the lives of the rapists, thieves, murderers, and molesters for whose souls he struggled. Every hellbound bastard in the Alabama penal system had a crayola Christ James had drawn taped in his cell. This endless drawing of Jesus had a profound effect on James, like repeating a word until it sounds hilarious and absurd and turns to laughter. This is of course heresy and why James will burn in hell, where he'll be a famous artist. He enjoys playing with his terrarium, soothsaying, and other hobbies of
simulated godhood.
